Srila Prabhupada, a multifaceted transcendental personality, earned various titles throughout his life, including scholar, philosopher, cultural ambassador, prolific author, religious leader, spiritual teacher, social critic, and holy man. In essence, he encompassed all these roles and much more.
Lord Sri Krishna incarnated as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu over 500 years ago in the village of Navadvipa, West Bengal. His divine mission was to launch the Sankirtana Movement, the spiritual path for Kali Yuga. He proclaimed that the chanting of His holy names would extend far beyond the borders of India, reaching every nook and corner of the world. He foresaw the appearance of a chief emissary to fulfil this prophecy.
Srila Prabhupada manifested to actualize this prophecy. Born on September 1, 1896, in a modest house in the Tollygunge suburb of Calcutta, he was named Abhay Charan, signifying fearlessness attained through surrender to Lord Krishna's lotus feet.
An astrologer, while preparing the baby's horoscope, prophesied that at the age of seventy, this child would traverse the ocean, emerge as a prominent religious teacher, and establish 108 Krishna temples. Astonishingly, these predictions became a reality.
In 1965, at the age of sixty-nine, Srila Prabhupada embarked on a voyage to the United States, where he founded the Hare Krishna Movement. He embarked on a global journey, circling the world fourteen times, and successfully established 108 Krishna temples while initiating over 10,000 disciples into the path of Krishna consciousness.
Srila Prabhupada's mission to spread the wisdom of Krishna Consciousness initially faced resistance in India. However, in 1965, at the age of 69, as per the directions of his Guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, he ventured to the United States and laid the foundation for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Over the ensuing 11 years, he embarked on an extraordinary journey, circumnavigating the globe 14 times. During this period, he inspired his devoted followers, delivered enlightening discourses, and shared the profound philosophy of Krishna Consciousness with eager learners.
Srila Prabhupada's arrival in the United States coincided with a tumultuous period, marked by widespread dissatisfaction with America's involvement in the Vietnam War. The youth of America sought an alternative to the prevailing norms and thus the counterculture movement, commonly known as the "hippie culture," emerged. Srila Prabhupada presented a compelling alternative.
He introduced the Hare Krishna Movement to the public through various means, such as chanting in parks, distributing the Back to Godhead Magazine, organizing love feasts, and delivering lectures on the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam in rented storefronts. These efforts attracted numerous young individuals who eventually became his disciples.
Srila Prabhupada diligently trained his disciples in the art of Deity Worship, a practice in which the Supreme Lord manifests in the form of Deities to allow devotees to serve Him. By serving the Deities with utmost devotion, the devotees aim to transcend their material attachments and cultivate pure love for God, ultimately leading to a successful and spiritually enriched life.
In a bid to revive the Krishna Conscious tradition, Srila Prabhupada envisioned self-sufficient farm communities rooted in the principles of "Simple Living, High Thinking." In 1972, he established a Gurukul in Dallas, Texas, following the traditional Vedic educational model. He founded 108 Krishna temples and many farm communities. He also gave an ultimatum that no one within a 10-mile radius of an ISKCON temple should go hungry, which eventually led to the birth of The Akshaya Patra Foundation in the year 2000.
Among Srila Prabhupada's myriad contributions, he regarded his books as paramount. These publications convey the timeless wisdom of Vedic scriptures in modern English, presenting profound insights with clarity and simplicity that resonate with the contemporary world. His books have transformed the lives of countless individuals.
The transcendental knowledge contained in these books serve as the bedrock of the Hare Krishna Movement. Srila Prabhupada fervently encouraged his devotees to distribute this literature widely, resulting in translations in numerous major languages and widespread distribution across the globe.
Srila Prabhupada's teachings underline that Krishna Consciousness is not a mere philosophical concept or a part-time religious pursuit; it is a way of life. He extensively expounded the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness in his books and urged everyone to make it a habit to read and derive immense benefit from them.
